1970'S POSTER MAGAZINES

Of all the magazines devoted to Star Trek over the years, my personal favorite has got to be the “Star Trek Poster Book” magazine published by Paradise Press in the late 1970's. These jewels were 8-1/2" X 11" size, fold-out publications featuring 8 pages of photos and text on TOS with the reverse side featuring a “giant” 34" X 22-1/2" poster, all for $1! Although the poster was clearly the main attraction, the articles were also great: “Inside a Vulcan mind” and an interview with Mr. Spock (not Leonard Nimoy, kids...Spock!) were some of the creative features in this series. The color photo reproduction was brilliant, for the period, as the editors always seemed to pick the best photos for the articles as well as the poster. I’m not sure how many there were (there were at least 4, probably upwards of 10 total) since I’ve only been able to find a few of them. Finding them in “near-mint” condition is difficult since most fans put up the posters which resulted in thumbtack holes, edge tears, old scotch tape, and general dog-earing of the corners. Star Trek: The Motion Picture also received it’s own special issue in this format (see below). Paradise also did poster magazine series for Star Wars, Close Encounters, Meteor, Superman, Battlestar Galactica, and other popular genre films of the era.

Featured here are scans of four pages each from issues #4, 5 and the first three pages of the TMP issue (the poster is the same image as the cover/page 1). The posters, unfortunately, are too large to fit in a home scanner.  As always, if any of you have some of these in your closet (or on your wall) we’d love to see scans of the covers at least, so send them in if can.

SUPERMAG VOLUME 4, #5; EARLY 1980

Published by Xerox Education Publications, Supermag was an 8-1/2" X 5-1/2" kids magazine that you could order through your school back in the 1970s-‘80s. It was kind of like a combination of Newsweek and People, but designed for kids, and often had covers & articles featuring popular culture icons like “The Fonz”, Mork & Mindy, and–of course–Star Trek. Posted below is the TMP issue cover, article, and pin-up from my own collection.

ARTIFACTS FROM THE FUTURE

This is an article from The Star Trek Communicator #126, 12/99-1/00, pp. 26-30, titled "Artifacts from the future" by Harvey Werksman Jr. This was a cool article about various TOS collectibles, many of which I hadn't seen before.
