Terrorists use three hijacked commercial airliners to
conduct suicide attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City
and the Pentagon in Washington, DC. A fourth plane fails in its
attempt and crashes after passengers wrest control from the
hijackers. Thousands of lives were lost in this horrible tragedy
which immediately launched the United States into a widespread war
against terrorism. (Contemporary accounts.) Entry from the
Enterprise exploration timeline: "A terrorist attack on the United
States leaves thousands of innocent civilians dead, a horrific
tragedy that forces all nations of the world to re-evaluate their
values and priorities, and galvanizes the people of Earth to strive
harder to put their differences behind them." This event is also

World War III begins.
Colonel Green Colonel Green, a leader in the conflict, becomes known for his cruelty during the course of the conflict. (sources: Enterprise exploration timeline, "The Savage Curtain" (TOS))
Six hundred million people died in the hostilities and most major cities were destroyed. The previously flourishing technological societies of Earth were thrown back to a barbaric state more like the Dark Ages of over 1,000 years earlier.
Few governments survived, and recovery was hampered further by the nuclear winter caused by dust and debris thrown into an atmosphere already saturated with radioactive isotopes. Life for the survivors was very hard. (Star Trek - The Magazine, Vol. 1 Issue 16)
(Notably, however, some institutions and locations were spared. San Francisco and Paris both seem to have survived, and some schools such as Cambridge and Princeton were unharmed. Other institutions, such as Westpoint, also remained. It also seems likely that the colonists on the Moon survived.)
This conflict also affected the Mirror Earth, as suggested by the Zephrem Cochrane sequence in "In a Mirror Darkly, Part One". Whether or not Imperial Earth existed prior to World War III is unclear. |

The Vulcan High Command concludes that a military base is being built on Raytan, and determines to put an end to it. A Vulcan occupation force arrives on Raytan, complete with Vulcan intelligence officers. A young intelligence officer named Suval, later to become Vulcan's ambassador to Earth, is part of the occupation force. According to Andorian accounts, the settlers on Raytan are forcibly moved into refugee camps and moved off planet. These events apparently lead to one of two wars that the Vulcans and Andorians fight over Raytan over the next 100 years. ("Cease Fire")

Ultimately, after some time (years?) and after discovering that the Arkonians have been deceitful, the Vulcan High Command withdraws its contingent from Arkonians. ("Dawn") |

Mid
to Late 2050's |
The world slowly recovers from the ravages of World War III. A few nation states survive at least in part, and will re-emerge in the years to follow. (Hoshi mentions the United States is still considered a geopolitical entity in 2063 "Fallen Hero", and we know that Australia survives as an independent nation until the 22nd century)
In what became known as the post atomic horror, the legal system is reduced to the principle of "guilty until proven innocent." Amries during this period begin to control their soldiers through the use of drugs. ("Encounter at Farpoint": (TNG) - date given)
During this time, all the edicts of the New United Nations are rendered null as all "United Earth nonsense is abolished." ("Encounter at Farpoint")
Also on Vulcan, it is perhaps around this time than T'Pol's mother T'Les is born (speculation: assumes that T'Les is thirty when T'Pol is born)

In the post-war era, groups of humans struggle to rebuild their society. Progress was made at different rates in different areas. (Star Trek - The Magazine, Vol. 1, Issue 16)
In Montana, Zefram Cochrane works to convert an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) into the first faster-than-light, or warp, spaceship – the Phoenix. The Phoenix's test flight attracts the attention of other space travelers and "first contact" is soon made between humans and Vulcans.
These events are so critical to Earth history, that Borg from the 24th century come to this time to attempt to keep the launch of the Phoenix from happening. The intervention of the crew of the Enterprise-E, also from the 24th century, preserves the launch which facilitates the historic first contact between Vulcans and the people of Earth. Star Trek: First Contact; Enterprise exploration timeline , Phoenix flight is shown in opening of Enterprise.)
A Borg sphere, shot down over the Earth in this exchange, crashes in the Arctic Circle. These remains, inclusive of some inactive drones, are discovered by researchers in February 2153. ("Regeneration")
It seems unlikely this Borg attack occurred in the Mirror Universe, and the intervention by Enterprise-E would have had no correlation there. |

FIRST CONTACT
The contact with extraterrestrials marks a key moment in human history, marking the beginning of the uniting of Earth.
In the Mirror Universe, events take a slightly different course. Cochrane, convinced the Vulcans have come to invade Earth, shoots the Vulcan visitor when he comes down the ramp of his ship. Cochrane and his band then proceed to capture the Vulcan ship, loot it, and learn it's technology. First contact provides the technology for the establishment of the interplanetary and ultimately interstellar Earth Empire. ("In a Mirror Darkly, Part One).
In the regular universe, not long after first contact, Solkar, the first Vulcan Ambassador to Earth, arrives. ("The Catwalk")
From this point on, Earth begins a rapid recovery from the ravages of World War III. Assisted by the sometimes reluctant Vulcans, humanity begins the long process of rebuilding society, unifying the Earth's governments and reaching out into space. (First Contact, Carbon Creek)
When describing this period, which is considered by many to be the turning point where humanity turned away from war and worked towards unifying the world and solving problems in common, Archer indicates that it began with "a few courageous people who realized they could make a difference." ("Judgment")
Within a very short period of time, Earth begins sending vessels out into space, exploring the unknown.
The first ships used to colonize the solar systems have nuclear reactors. ("Borderland")
Velar, who will become a famous and successful Vulcan ambassador, is troubled by this chain of events. She is concerned that the people of Earth, so recently have come through a devastating war, can by no means be ready for interstellar travel. ("Fallen Hero") |
|
|
|
 |
2064 |
A wholesale revolution in space exploration begins By the time that Terra Nova is first discovered around 2066 there is a human colony on the Moon at New Berlin and a colony at Utopia Planetia on Mars. There are even a few colonies on asteroids within the solar system by that point. ("Terra Nova.")
Early warp vessels make use of the design of the 1990's era space vehicle, the DY-100. The new version of the ship are the DY-500 class. Where the DY-100 had been sub warp "sleeper ships" the new DY-500 class ships have warp drives installed and remain in use until the 2120s. (speculation. sources: "Space Seed," "Strange New World," "Up the Long Ladder," Star Trek Encyclopedia.)
Princeton - Blair HallDuring this year, Zephrem Cochrane is asked to speak at Princeton, to give a commencement note address. In his remarks about First Contact he mentions his encounter with "cybernetic creatures from the future" and reveals that these creatures were defeated by a group of humans from the future. These comments are widely disregarded and Cochrane later distances himself from this remarks, disavowing them. (89 years before "Regeneration")
Also in 2064, this is roughly the time when Malcolm Reed's Great Uncle was born. (date is speculation based on "Minefield") |

2065 |
The first deep-space exploration vessel since 2037, the
S.S. Valiant, departs Earth. Transmissions from the ship eventually

that there had been no deep space exploration since 2037) |
|

|
 |
2066 |
The planet Terra Nova, only 20 light years away from
Earth, is discovered. (speculation - one year before the mission is
launched.) |
|
|
|
 |
2067 |
The Conestoga, a ship commanded by Captain Mitchell, is
sent out by the Space Agency to colonize the new planet known as
Terra Nova. This was the first time the humans had tried to colonize
deep space. It would take nine years to complete the journey.
("Terra Nova" - 9 years before the colony established.)
John Burke of the Royal Academy is the first to map an area of space that contains Sherman's Planet. That such important research was being done by the Royal Academy at this time suggests that at least some areas of the United Kingdom had made a reasonable recovery from the devastation of the war. Other distinguished institutions and structures also survived, such as Cambridge University and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. (sources: "The Trouble with Tribbles" (TOS), Enterprise exploration timeline, Star Trek - The Magazine, Vol. 1, Issue 16. )
Because previous deep-space exploration attempts ultimately failed, a new approach, an unmanned probe named Friendship 1, leaves Earth with a message of peace, warp technology instructions, and an invitation to visit Earth. ( "Friendship One" (VGR), Enterprise exploration timeline )
The civilization on Levinius V is destroyed by the "flying parasites." ("Operation—Annihilate!")
The Great Awakening on Argelius II. The Awakening marked their cultures entrance into a hedonistic society. ("Wolf in the Fold")
A radiation-laden freighter from an unidentified race discovered in the Gamelan system in 2367 was determined to have been at least 300 years old. (TNG "Final Mission") |

|
 |
2069 |
The Klingon Emperor dies. No successor ascends the throne. ("Rightful Heir" (TNG)) Note: The end of this office does not signal any sort of decline - Kolos describes Klingon society as "great" and in the period prior to the 2120s, which was an time when Klingons were not predominantly warlike. ("Judgment")
The Skorr, a race of avian beings, long existed as a warrior race with advanced technology and the ability to breed vast armies very quickly. Around 2069, a great Skorr philosopher, Alar, lead the Skorr into a new era of peace. After Alar's death, his thought patterns were preserved in an indurite sculpture referred to as the "Soul of Skorr." ("The Jihad" - TAS)
According to the animated episodes, the series of four wars between Earth and the Kzinti, a race of felinoid warriors, finally ends around this time with the Kzinti being ultimately defeated. It doesn't really fit here, however, so I have moved it out 100 years. Please see 2169. |

|
 |
2070 |
More interstellar colonization efforts are launched, even though the Conestoga is still in transit to Terra Nova.
The first of the ten space arks is launched at this time. (Terratin Incident).
As well, it seems likely that this was the time that Harry Kim's ancestor Jack piloted a deep space mission to Beta Capricus, while the rest of his crew is in stasis. When he finds no sign of life he turns around without waking up the crew. The ship didn't yet have a subspace transmitter ("11:59," Voyager). Note: the mission was said to have been begun in 2210, but this entry assumes Harry had his dates incorrect. See also another entry at 2070.)
This is the era represented by the unknown warp vessel in the opening sequence of Enterprise. (speculation from Enterprise opening sequence - see image left) The ship is shown flying over an Earth colony - perhaps Luna?
In the Mirror Universe, this same era is represented by the same picture of an unknown warp vessel, this time bombing the unknown planet. By this time the formation of the interplanetary Earth Empire is well underway. (taken from opening sequence for "In a Mirror Darkly, parts one and two") Perhaps the first step was to return to the Moon and bomb Luna into submission? In that case, maybe the Imperial Earth moon landing from the same sequence is of this era, although the astronaut is wearing a space suit that looks to be of a 2250's vintage.
Suspiria, one of the Nacene taking care of the Ocampa, decides to leave the region and explore the galaxy. She creates a small array similar to her companion's array and departs with a large number of Ocampa, the first Ocampa to leave their homeworld. No historical records on the Ocampa homeworld exist of this small exodus. ("Cold Fire" (VOY)) |

The Terra Nova colony, the first human colony outside of the solar system, is established. Trip's grandfather saw the first transmissions from "Terra Nova" when he was a child. (5 years prior to the breakdown in relations and the asteroidal impact, 80 years prior to "Terra Nova.") That same year, Bernadette Fuller is born to a colonist family. It is unclear whether she was born on the planet or onboard the colony ship Conestoga en route to Terra Nova. (75 years prior to "Terra Nova." (ENT)) |

2079 |
At least in some regions, the military courts of the Post Atomic Horror continue. (date given in Encounter at Farpoint)
Also during this year, the number of states in the United States changes again, and is no longer 52. Presumably, it is an increase in the number of states, but it could be a decrease. From other evidence in Star Trek, it is unlikely that the reason for the number of states changing is integration into the world government or dissolution. (From Riker's reference to the historical span of the 52 star flag in "The Royale": 2033-2079) |

 |
Early 2081 |
Having proved interplanetary colonization is viable, the Earth government decides "nothing succeeds like success" and plans to send another expedition to Terra Nova. The existing colonists on Terra Nova do not wish additional inhabitants, and so a dispute breaks out between the Earth and the colony. (speculation, a few months before the asteroidal impact, "Terra Nova" (ENT)) |
|
|
|
 |
Later in 2081 |
A rouge asteroid strikes Terra Nova. Captain Mitchell, the leader of the colony, attempts to send one last communication to Earth, accusing the Earth government of having attacked the Novans. The radioactive fallout resulting from the asteroidal impact eventually kills off all of the adult colonists, and the children are forced to fend for themselves, seeking refuge in underground caves. Only the ones five years old and younger develop an immunity to the radiation. (70 years before "Terra Nova", (ENT)) |

Also in 2082, at age 18, Malcolm Reed's Great Uncle signs up for the Royal Navy. He would join the submarine service. (Speculation based on "Minefield")
The Lornack Clan on Acamar II begins a bitter feud with the Tralestas. (280 years before "The Vengeance Factor") |

Vega Colony is established. (speculation) Vega was still a colony as of 2254. Some sources list Vega as an early Federation member planet. (eg. The Worlds of the Federation) |

2088 |
T'Pol is born on Vulcan. She is an only child. Her mother is T'Les.
(T'Pol gives her age as 66 in "Zero Hour." We know T'Pol has no siblings from "The Xindi." We get T'Les' name from "Home.") |

2089 |
Proxima Colony is established (speculation). It is still a colony as of 2154 (Borderland).
The Andorians and Vulcans begin negotiations about the status of Raytan. The negotiations take eight years and an accord is finally reached in 2097. ("Cease Fire") It is logical to assume that this process began at the end of a conflict - perhaps the second war that was fought over Raytan between the Andorians and Vulcans. |

2090 |
Malcolm Reed's Great Uncle dies when the HMS Clement, a
nuclear submarine, is sunk after striking an undersea mine. It had
been traveling on a patrol beneath the ice cap when this event
occurred. To save the crew, he had locked himself in the engine room
and kept the reactor from melting down, while the rest escaped. This
story had a great affect on Malcolm, even though it seems unlikely
he was alive when the events took place. (date is speculation based
on "Minefield")
Zephrem Cochrane perfects the warp 2 engine, and construction begins on the first of the warp 2 freighters that will usher in a new era of interstellar travel and commerce. (speculation, based on "Fortunate Son" and "Horizon")
An engine capable of propelling vessels faster than warp 2 would prove somewhat elusive, and it would not be until the mid 2140's that a successful testing of a ship capable of Warp 3 would succeed. ("First Flight") |

2091 |
Warp 2 capable freighters first begin to be used to ship cargo on long runs from planet to planet. Their crews, the "boomers" develop an unique culture with strong bonds of loyalty to their families and their ships. Three generations (which I took to be 60 years) prior to "Fortunate Son" (ENT) |

2092 |
Dr. Phlox is born on Denoblia, a crowded planet with a billion people on a single continent.
Date is speculation. Press releases state that Dr. Phlox's age is unknown. The actor, John Billingsley, who plays Dr. Phlox, was 51 at the time that "Broken Bow" was filmed. However, the mention in "A Night in Sickbay" that all of his children have grown up and left home and have chosen careers suggests he may be older, perhaps 60 in 2152. Crowded planet info from "The Catwalk"
Also around about 2092, Malcolm Reed's parents are born in England. Malcolm's father is in the Royal Navy, as was Malcolm's Grandfather and Great Uncle. (speculation: assumes they were 30 when Malcolm was born) |

 |
2093 |
At age seven, T'Pol undergoes a ceremony that arranges her marriage to Koss. ("Home" - Date is speculation, based on "Amok Time" and "Breaking the Ice.") Also while 7 years of age, T'Pol undergoes the kahs-wan ritual, where she is taken to the desert and left there to try and survive. ("Yesteryear", "The Catwalk")
Also in 2093, the people of Coridan achieve warp capability. (Star Trek Star Charts, p. 53) |

|
 |
2097 |
Vulcan finally establishes its claim to Raytan, after eight long years of negotiating with the Andorians. Ambassador Suval has been part of the entire process. ("Cease Fire" - year given) As part of the treaty, the planet is abandoned and a surveillance satellite placed in orbit to monitor compliance with the accord. |

2098 |
Travis Mayweather's father is born in America on Earth. (speculation based on "Horizon." Assumes he was quite young, only 55, at the time of his death in December 2152) |

2099 |
Arik Soong is born.
(based on age of Brent Spiner, who portrayed him, in the fourth season
of Enterprise) |
